The invention relates to the treatment of shale oil which is contaminated with shale solids and metals present in the form of individual particles, for example with iron and arsenic, in a closely coupled two-stage hydroprocessing method by a) contacting contaminated shale oil with hydrogen in a hydrothermal treatment zone to form a product which still contains shale oil solids and metals, and b) catalytic hydroprocessing of the product by passing it through a hydroprocessing zone with hydrogen gas in upward flow relative to the catalyst of the hydroprocessing zone.
