PURPOSE:To prepare L-serine, economically, in an industrial scale, by contacting a substrate solution containing glycine with microbial cells of Sarcina genus resistant to serine hydroxamate, D-serine, L-serine and glycine, and capable of producing L-serine from glycine. CONSTITUTION:For example, Sarcina albida MR-34 (FERM-P No.6084) is subjected to conventional mutation treatment, and a bacterial strain which can grow on an agar medium containing serine hydroxamate, D-serie, L-serine and glycine, in which the parent strain cannot be grown is selected. A strain resistant to serine hydroxamate, D-serine, L-serine and glycine and capable of producing L-serine from glycine, e.g. Sarcina albida OS-2210 (FERM-P No.6696), can be obtained by the process. The living bacterial cell or treated cells are brought into contact with a substrate solution containing glycine to form L-serine in the reaction solution. |
