The drive mechanism(29,30,31), which actuates the thread takeup appts.(28,33), is adjustable to vary the amount of thread(26) taken up from the loop-taker of the sewing machine, pref. by nipping the thread between a driven feed roll(28) and a movable pressure roll(33) for a predetermined time. The feed roll(28) is driven by a stepping motor controlled by the data processor. The takeup amount is determined by a data processor which receives sensed work thickness data and stitch length data and automatically calculates the required amount to be taken up.
