An improved catalytic bed for the production of formaldehyde was invented, which had a fixed bottom plate (convexed downward) made of a nickel alloy of more than 25 wt.% Ni (pref.>30 wt.%), 1.0-30 wt.% Cr, and less than 60 wt.% Fe or 2.5-30 wt.% Mo. The convexed reactor instead of the conventional flat plate-bottom reactor was so designed that it could prevent the catalytic bed from thermally cracking during the long term operation.
