The milk enters the meter via an inlet pipe and flows around a buffer vat and into a central pipe. At the bottom of the central pipe is an electromagnetically operated valve. When the solenoid is energised, it allows the milk to rise into the measuring vat, where it lifts a float. A magnet in the float operates a Hall-effect detector set in the wall, which causes the solenoid to deenergise, closing off the influx of further milk and allowing the measured milk to flow into a storage vat. The vacuum necessary for the milking and for drawing the milk through the meter is supplied via a connection on the buffer vat cover. The spreader and a tube ensure that milk is not drawn out into the vacuum pipe. Several detectors set into the wall can be selected to measure different quantities of milk.
