The combined fire grate and ash pan is used on open fires. The grate is only supported at the rear, enabling the ash pan to enclose the grate completely. Rectangular cross-section vertical protrusions (1) at the front enable the tray (3) to be slid into position, and create an air space between floor and tray for efficient ventilation under grate. Parallel arranged guide strips (2) permits the tray to be slid into position without the danger of misalignment, with consequent spillage of cinder or ash.
