The multi-plate friction clutch or brake comprises input and output members together forming an axial chamber accommodating N metal friction discs keyed to the one member and N discs with friction linings keyed to the other. Their heat-conductivity and torque-absorption factors are each 1.00. There are at least 2N friction discs (56,64) of the same axial length, each comprising a metal core (58,66) of the same axial length and a friction lining (62,70) on one side only, keyed alternately to the input and output members (40,44), so that each metal surface is opposite a friction lining.
