The housing (10) which contains all mechanical parts of the seat belt retractor is made of a bendable aluminium-magnesium-copper alloy and the basic workpiece is produced by extrusion of an enclosed tube-cross section profile. The housing blanks are obtained by cutting to length the extruded tubes and an additional oblique cut along the line (25) further reduces the weight of the housing. Further machining operations produce the opening (14) for the fixing bolt (15) and the two opposite openings for the bearing assembly (17). The sudden load on the housing in the event of an accident is transferred from the catch mechanism (20) onto a pressure ring (21). In addition to six rivets (27) by which the pressure ring (21) is fixed to the housing, the hexagonal shape of the pressure ring (21) with upper and lower horizontal sides (28) resting against ribs (29) of the housing improves the ruggedness of the structure.
