The friction clutch is partic. for automotive use, having a plate spring clamping a clutch plate between a pressure plate and a flywheel etc. fixed to the flywheel and acting on the sliding pressure plate. The spring comprises an annular with tongues extending inwards. The spring itself (5) forms the hinge (13) radially inside the outer working edge (7), without any contact with another component such as a cover, and on actuation the edge and the internal tongues (11) swing in opposite directions about the hinge, in the manner of a double-armed lever. The fixing portions of the spring can be formed by arms (9,9a) integral with the spring and rigid in the axial direction so as to absorb the withdrawal forces. They join onto the annular body via an intermediate zone allowing alteration in the cone angle of the spring.
