In an automatic multi-spindle lathe with for example six tool spindles, the simplification of the tool displacement should make possible the manufacture of a large number of machined parts per time unit, as well as a fast replacement in case of wear or breakage of the tool. To this effect, the invention provides for the storage of tools (81) on tool spindles (65, 65') movable with a reciprocating axial motion about axes (66) parallel to the drum axis (8). The fast turning motion which is thereby made possible and the fast axial motion of the tools owing to the tool spindles make possible a fast machining of workpieces held by the workpiece spindles.
