A toothed rack guide is seated in a sliding fashion on the rear (10) of a toothed rack (2) in which a pinion engages, and said guide presses the toothed rack (2) against the pinion with the aid of a spring which is held by a support. Between the toothed rack guide and the support, a small amount of play is maintained which is small when the toothed rack is located in the centre position and increases towards the ends of the toothed rack. <IMAGE>
