An electrode control device for an arc furnace is described, in which a first circuit is produced for generating an electrical fault signal as a function of the magnitude and the direction of change of the electrical parameters of the electrode. The fault signal is used for controlling a silicon-controlled semiconductor diode which is provided between a drive motor for the electrode and its voltage source. A signal generator is furthermore coupled to the motor in order to supply a signal which is dependent on the rotation speed and direction of rotation of the motor for a further control of the silicon-controlled rectifier.
