<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for synthesizing drugs easily in high yield, by reacting styrene with hydrochloric acid in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt, reacting the resultant substance with sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide in the presence of both the quaternary ammonium salt and water. CONSTITUTION:Styrene shown by the formula I is reacted with hydrochloric acid in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt (e.g., trioctylmethylammonium chloride, etc.) in an amount effective as a phase transfer catalyst, to give 1- phenylethyl chloride shown by the formula II. This compound is reacted with sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide reusing the quaternary ammonium salt in the presence of water at 40-150 deg.C, preferably 80-130 deg.C for 30min-20hr under heating, to give the desired compound shown by the formula III. The amount of sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide used is 2-0.16 the amount of sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide.</p> |
