For the ground excavation in the through-pressing of pipes (2) with diameters which are no longer accessible, an excavating method is described in which the excavating tool (11) with a hollow shaft (12) is driven and manipulated from the starting shaft (1) so that sensitive drive units are no longer located at the face in the cutting head (6) of the pipe drive. The hollow shaft (12) at the same time serves to hydraulically remove the released soil. The fluid for supporting, loosening and/or conveying is supplied in the casing pipe. An excavating tool (10, 11) adapted to this method can be combined with the cutting head (6) in a variety of ways for various ways of treating the working face. It can be retracted, serviced or exchanged from the starting shaft (1). <IMAGE>
