At the boundary of successive route sections (I, II), firstly an interrogation device (AB) is provided which has a dot-shaped trigger zone within which the passage of response devices (AN) arranged on every vehicle (F) passing through the route is detected. In addition, a vehicle detector (IS1, U2) which overlaps the influence zone with its trigger zone is provided at the boundary. Due to the fact that two independent systems are influenced, the passage of a vehicle (F) reliably leads to an occupation report for the route section (II) which lies ahead in the driving direction. A clear report for the route section (I) which respectively precedes in the driving direction only occurs if both systems react in a predetermined sequence. <IMAGE>
