When carrying out an automatic margin control in a processor-controlled ideographic text processing device, it must be ensured that certain characters are not placed at the start of a new line independently of the preceding character. After the occurrence of a margin signal, the following character is therefore tested as to whether it belongs to a group of characters which are exceeding the margin boundary. If it is detected that this is the case, the line change and carriage return are suppressed and only carried out after the character is issued. On the other hand, if this is detected not to be the case the line change and carriage return are first carried out and then the character is issued.
