The device is for a crane which is subject to a load, and determines the moment produced by the load through detection of deformations in one or more components, e.g. the crane arm, column, frame or baseplate. It comprises a laser beam transmitter (6) and a position-sensitive detector (7) which are built into the crane, the transmitter being directed towards the detector. At least the transmitter or the detector is fitted on the component (8) deformed by the moment. - An alternative arrangement is for one of them to be fitted on a part in the crane which is not deformed by the moment, or for both of them to be fitted on a deformable component (8) on opposite sides around a lever centre (9). A further optional arrangement involves either the transmitter or the detector to be fitted on the crane arm, with the other fitted on or near the frame or column.
