Polysaccharides are prepd. bacteriologically using Zoogloea ramigera strain 115 bacteria by:- (A) developing the bacteria in a sterile aq. medium contg. a source of C such as glucose, starch or potatoes, a source of N such as NH4Cl, NH4NO3 or KNO3, nutritive salts such as phosphates or sulphates, and an Fe salt such as FeCl3 or Fe2 (SO4), at a concn. of 0.15-45 pref. 0.5-5 mg/l, to obtain a dense suspension of the bacteria, and (B) transferring the obtd. suspension to a fermenting vessel contg. a sterile aq. medium of the above compsn. and leaving the bacteria in the vessel for 20-60, pref. 30-50 hrs., so that it consumes mainly all the added C source, at an initial concn. of 10-50 g C source/l, to obtain a weakly viscous prod. contg. 10-35 g/l polymer in the form of capsules. - The process overcomes prior art drawbacks such as a very long culture period, low concn. of polymers and high viscosity of the culture medium. The process is feasible industrially. |
