PURPOSE:To obtain a battery having an excellent electric-discharge performance by causing the oxide or hydroxide of a divalent metal to react with a sizing agent containing a carboxyl group so as to form films of the sizing agent, which is greatly swolled by alkaline electrolyte and is hightly hydrophilic, around the negative powder. CONSTITUTION:After 1,000g of amalgamated zinc powder of 85-150 mesh, 6g of polyacrylic acid powder and 6g of magnesium hydroxide powder used as the hydroxide of a divalent metal are sufficiently mixed and stirred, 15g of water is added with a sprayer while stirring the mixture to form films of the sizing agent around the above amalgamated zinc powder while allowing polyacrylic acid and magnesium hydroxide to react, and the thus prepared mixture powder is dried in a dryer at 45 deg.C for about one hour. Next, a positive mixture consisting of mercury oxide, manganese dioxide and graphite is packed into the bottom of a positive case 1, and a polypropylene separator 3 is layered on the packed mixture. The negative mixture 6 is prepared by packing the above negative powder into the negative case 7 before the powder is gelled by being combined with aqueous potassium hydroxide solution in which zinc oxide is dissolved. |
