The present invention relates to the folding of chairs and permits the folding of a chair in the lateral direction and in the transverse direction. This device consists of four lateral uprights 1-2-3-4 articulated together in pairs and joined by eight articulation members 5 to four transverse uprights 6-7-8-9 articulated together in pairs. A tension member 12 which forms the seat of the chair is fastened to one end of each upright. A tension member 14, which forms the back of the chair, is optionally provided between two uprights. Automatically folding braces 11 are optionally provided between two uprights as structural reinforcements. Similarly, a lockable brace 10 may optionally be provided between two uprights for locking the chair in the unfolded position. The present invention may be used as a folding seat which occupies a small space. <IMAGE>
