PURPOSE:To obtain negative display having pure black tone in an electrolytic effect type liquid crystal display element using twisted nematic liquid crystals, by arranging a filter capable of absorbing transmitted light having high transmittance in the specified wavelength region of the visible light due to the interference phenomenon. CONSTITUTION:In the electrolytic effect type liquid crystal display cell, since incident linear polarized light can be rotated optically by the optical rotation angle of the liquid crystal molecules in the case of being unable of satisfying dXDELTAn>>lambda, where (d) is thickness of the liquid crystals, DELTAn is birefringenece, and lambda is wavelength, the light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer is colored by interference of birefrigence, and the background is colored, resulting in forming difficultly discriminable display. A color filter capable of absorbing the light in the specified wavelength region causing such a phenomenon is arranged in parallel to the display element. For example, when the light in 500-700nm wavelengths causes such a phenomenon, a filter for absorbing the light in such a region is used to exhibit the whole flat transmittance. |
