The method consists in reading the characters from a document in the form of a set of black points and white points which are recorded in a memory in order to form therein the electronic image of the document. The electronic image of each character of the document is compared with the contents of a memory MB1 in which the images of certain characters have already been recorded, in this memory MB1 the image of the character is recorded if it is not already there, in a memory MA1 is recorded the address on the document of this character and the address of its image in memory MB1 and so on for each character, and the contents of the memories MB1 and MA1 are transmitted to a receiver C2, MB2, MA2. The invention applies especially to transmission by fax, to automatic reading of documents, etc. <IMAGE>
