The bulk material, e.g. granular, fibrous, powdery or soft material, is fed through a channel into the conveyor tube or pipe in which its water content is to be measured continuously. The tube itself forms one electrode in an electrical circuit, the other electrode being provided by the helicoid conveyor inside the tube, which carries the material towards an outlet. A membrane valve at the outlet acts as a baffle which compresses the material in the tube. The electrical circuit delivers a constantly changing output signal which is a measure of the water content of the material. Pref. the helicoid conveyor is rotated from outside the tube, from which it is electrically separated and comprises a spiral in which a spindle extends axially. Its free end works in conjunction with the membrane valve, which pref. comprises a plate-shaped disc attached centrally to the free end.
