Moist friable blocks, e.g. peat or brown coal are dried by hot gas flow. The device comprises a cylindrical vertical tube (4), into which discharge a gas pipe and a block delivering pipe. Baffle bars (13-15), either horizontal or inclined to the vertical, protrude into the tube and are mounted one above the other with their points of contact with the tube walls distributed round the periphery. They can be so arranged that their number, slowing down the falling blocks, is greatest near the tube axis, but their vertical and angular spacing can be constant.
