The invention relates to a cleaning device for beet-harvesting machines, by means of which the beet lifted out of the ground is conveyed and at the same time freed of adhering earth. To match the intensity of the cleaning devices to the harvesting conditions, it is known to equip screening wheels with gears which permit different rotational speeds. The rotational speed required is selected and set by appearance alone and necessitates increased attention on the part of the operating personnel. The result can be inadequate cleaning and beet losses. According to the invention, an electronic control circuit, known per se, having a plurality of transmitters, an evaluation unit and a setting unit preceeds the drive of the cleaning device, the transmitters being arranged directly in the region of the earth falling through. The transmitters are preferably arranged in the middle and rear region of the cleaning stage and have an "O-L" characteristic. <IMAGE>
