In a brake device for a bicycle whose braking force is produced by pedalling the bicycle in the opposite direction to the direction of travel and is transmitted to a brake (9) of a wheel by means of a force transmission device (10), which device is actuated with an actuation device (8) which operates in the manner of a reverse free wheel, in order to permit the brakes to be actuated independently of the rear axle, in particular in the case of a derailleur gear change, it is proposed to arrange the actuation device (8) on the pedal shaft (7) and to connect it to the brake (9) via the force transmission device (10).
