In a method for checking an electrical insulation monitoring device in an unearthed alternating- or direct-voltage system, for example for the auxiliary or control circuit of a machining or processing machine, a high-impedance deterioration in the insulation is artificially produced by means of an earth connection. To provide for automatic checking in a simple manner with respect to equipment and avoiding manual effort, an insulation fault is automatically generated after the supply voltage has been applied, this fault is determined (recognised) as an insulation fault and only then is the insulation of the remaining electrical circuits monitored.
