For the drive of escalators, a step-down ratio is required between a motor (2) and a stepped chain wheel (1), which step-down ratio is achieved according to the invention by a first and second gear unit (5, 6), the first gear unit (5) being designed as hypoid gearing which is driven by the motor (2) and transmits its torque to the second gear unit (6), which is constructed as spur gearing and which in turn directly drives the stepped chain wheel (1). This gearing arrangement makes a substantial contribution to the saving of energy by improving the efficiency from 65-70% to about 96% compared with the conventional worm gearing. <IMAGE>
