1,193,212. Hydrorefining; hydrocracking. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 25 April, 1968 [25 April, 1967], No. 19774/68. Heading C5E. A petroleum feed, e.g. crude or topped crude oil, or oils derived from shale oil, tar sands or coal, is preheated at 14, before or after mixing with at least 2500 SCF of recycle plus make up hydrogen per barrel of feed, and hydrodesulphurized at 16 while in the liquid phase at 600-850‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. using a fixed, moving or fluidized bed of a catalyst comprising an oxide or sulphide of Cr, Mo, W, U, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt on a support made by calcining an aluminium hydroxide containing 1À2 to 2À6 moles of water of hydration. The hydrodesulphurized material is separated at 40 into a gaseous phase and a liquid phase which is non-catalytically hydrocracked while in the liquid phase during a residence time of 200-3000 seconds at 700- 1000‹ F. and 500-5000 p.s.i.g. with hydrogen added from line 38. The cracked liquid stream is combined with the gaseous stream and the mixture separated at 28 into a gas phase and a liquid product containing naphtha, furnace oil and heavy fuel oil of below 0À5% sulphur. The gas phase from the separator 28 is treated to remove H 2 S arid a portion of this removed H 2 5 can be recycled to the hydrocracker 22 to provide therein a partial pressure of H 2 5 of 50- 2500 p.s.i.a. The liquid product from the separator 28 can be passed to a second separator from which a liquid product and a gas phase, which is combined with the gas phase from the separator 28, are obtained. |
