[Also in Division C7] A hydroxy-group-containing copolymer is prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with a polyhydric alcohol to produce a substantially monomeric hydroxyalkyl acid maleate and copolymerizing the maleate with an ethylenically unsaturated compound. The copolymer may be neutralized with a nitrogen-containing base. In the examples maleic anhydride is reacted with ethylene glycol and glycerol and the products copolymerized with styrene, butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, and methyl methacrylate in the presence of cumene hydroperoxide, tert.- dodecyl mercaptan, xylene, butanol, methyl 1 glycol acetate, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and di-tert.-butyl peroxide. The polymers are then blended with a melamine-formaldehyde resin and TiO 2 in xylene/butanol; an isocyanate resin; a butylated melamine resin and TiO 2 in xylene toluene and a hydrocarbon solvent; a copolymer of methacrylic acid, N-2-oxahexyl acrylamide, styrene and butyl acrylate, and TiO 2 in xylene/butanol; a melamine resin and TiO 2 ; and hexamethoxy methyl melamine in water, that of Example 6 having been neutralized with triethyl amine. , |
