Electric motor-driven knife, in particular for cutting foodstuffs, having a housing which possesses a handle and is intended for accommodating the drive motor and holding devices for at least one knife blade, and having a switching member for opening and closing the circuit for the drive motor. To prevent unintentional actuation of the switching member, the switching member is mounted moveably in the housing in such a way that, in a first partial movement, it can be conveyed only into a position of readiness, from which, in a second partial movement, it is conveyed into the end position closing the circuit of the drive motor. The switching member can be mounted in the housing of the electric motor such that the user can perform successive partial movements of the switching member, these partial movements having opposite directions of rotation.
