A hand grenade comprises a grenade body 1 and a releasable cap 3 held together by latching means 17, shell-halves 4 pivoted at 5 and substantially enclosing the grenade body, a spring- loaded, slidable member 6 carrying a firing pin 8 for a percussion cap 13, and a safety-pin 11 keeping the shell halves together and also preventing displacement of the member 6. In use, the grenade is grasped in the hand and the safety pin 11 withdrawn, whereupon the slidable member 6 comes to rest against bosses 16 of the shell-halves. Upon throwing the grenade, the force of the spring 7 causes the shell-halves, which are no longer manually retained, to pivot outwardly. The firing pin, in consequence, is driven against the percussion cap, whilst cam surfaces 21 of the member 6 act on corresponding surfaces 20 of the latching means and thereby release the cap from the grenade body. |
