PURPOSE:To provide a surface coated sintered alloy member enhanced in cutting capacity in high speed cutting, by coating the surface of a WC base hard sintered alloy substrate or a TiC base sintered cermet substrate with composite car bonitride of Si and Al. CONSTITUTION:A coating layer with an average layer thickness of 0.5-20mum comprising composite carbonitride of Si and Al is formed on the surface of a WC base hard sintered alloy substrate or a TiC base sintered cermet substrate by chemial vapor deposition treatment or the like to obtain a surface coated sintered alloy member for a cutting tool. This member shows high hardness and high toughness at a room temp. and a high temp., excellent anti-wear property and oxidation resistance possessed by the coating layer and has chemical stability at a high temp. Therefore, this member shows excellent cutting life when used as a cutting tool. |
