Phenols were prepd. by oxidizing benzoic acid in the vapor phase with copper-contg. catalyst. The reaction uses as catalysts copper compds., vanadium compds., and Ag compds. where the max. atomic ratio of vanadium to copper is 1:2, and that of Ag to copper is 1:2. Produced phenols are substd. or unsubstd. according to benzoic acids.
