A melt processable polyester capable of forming an anisotropic melt phase below 400 DEG C comprising recurring 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl, 4-oxybenzoyl, symmetrical dioxyaryl and symmetrical dicarboxyaryl moieties wherein the 6-oxy-2-naphthoyl moiety is present at a concentration of 3 to 15 mole percent. The polyester can be prepared on a relatively economical basis and has been found to undergo melt extrusion at a sufficiently low temperature to form high quality fibres, films and three-dimensional shaped articles.
