The method reduces mechanical deformation during the application of an insulating layer and increases the stability of the element while it is being welded to its supports. The element is twisted into a spiral shape (18) and has its two ends soldered together before assembly in the cathode. A support coil of low-resistance wire (16), which can be made of molybdenum is wrapped around each leg of the element and the lower ends of each coil are welded together (14) after positioning of the element. The length of the support coil is chosen to result in the desired resistance of remaining heater-element wire. The ends of the element, enclosed by the support coils, are welded to fixed supports. After assembly and connection to the supports, the weld joints can be broken to free the individual ends of the elements.
