Device for separating and welding a plastic film web (1) having a cutter bar (2) and counter bar (3) which are movable relative to one another in the cutting and welding cycle. Protective film strips (8, 11) are guided over the knife (6) of the cutting bar (2) and over the counter bar (3), which has a knife-insertion groove (7). The protective film strip (11) guided over the counter bar (3) and the knife-insertion groove (7) is held at at least one side upstream or downstream of the counter bar (3) between clamping jaws (16, 17) which are fastened to a restoring spring arrangement (18). The clamping jaws (16, 17) can be moved against the effect of the restoring spring arrangement (18) during insertion of the knife (6) into the knife-insertion groove as a function of the protective film strip (11) pressed into the knife-insertion groove (7) by the knife and be moved back by the restoring spring arrangement (18) during the upwards movement of the knife (6).
