Apparatus for heating gaseous, liquid or solid particulate materials includes three non-conductive tubular columns (12) for containing material to be heated, and electrodes (18, 24) associated with the columns such that each column receives one phase of a three-phase electrical a.c. supply to cause heating of the material in the column by conduction therethrough. Preferably a hopper arrangement below the columns forms one common electrode for the three columns. The apparatus can be used for activating or reactivating carbonaceous material or for many other purposes. |
