A powered percussion drill is described which can alternatively be operated in a drilling mode, in which a drill-chuck drive spindle is rotated without axial movement, and in a percussion-drilling mode in which the drive spindle is additionally moved back and forth. The drilling mode is set by a change-over plate, mounted so as to be displaceable into a holder in the drilling machine housing, being pressed in a direction in which teeth of a gear connected to the drive spindle are disengaged from the teeth on the holder. The percussion-drilling mode is set by the change-over plate being pressed in the other direction in order to bring the teeth of the gear into engagement with the teeth on the holder. When the drill insert connected to the rotating drive spindle is pressed against a workpiece in this operating mode, the alternating engaging and disengaging of the teeth cause the drive spindle to perform an axial reciprocating movement.
