Rotary piston engine for providing rotary drive or for conveying a gaseous medium, in which a rotatable piston (13) is mounted concentrically in a housing (12). The outer circumferential surface (15) of the piston (13) is at a distance from the inner circumferential surface (16) of the housing (12) and leaves free an annular space which is divided by projecting strips (18 and 19) extending as far as the outer circumference (15) of the piston (13) into at least one compression chamber (20) and a combustion chamber (21) which, upon rotation of the piston (13), is delimited by a half-moon-shaped valve body (30) which is eccentrically and rotatably mounted in the piston (13), can project above the outer circumferential surface (15) of the piston (13) as far as the inner wall (16) of the housing (12) and has a cavity (34) in which the working medium is compressed and, if required, ignited. The rotary motion of the valve body (30) is controlled by pins which slide in guide grooves (46) of the housing (12). <IMAGE>
