The device detects when both of two selector rods 10 and 12 of the transmission are in neutral by actuating a fixed switch part 30 in the top of the transmission housing 32 to enable the engine ignition circuit. The rod 10 carries a bracket 34 on which is pivotally mounted a lever 44 with a lower arm 48 cooperating with a cam track 52 on the other rod 12. When either selector rod moves in either direction out of neutral, the tip 54 of the lower arm 48 drops into either one or the other of two recesses 56, 58 of the cam track and the lever 44 drops. An upper arm 50 of the lever then releases pressure on an operating button 64 of the fixed switch part 30. The upper and lower arms 50 and 48 straddle a component 28 of the transmission itself, which would otherwise prevent installation of the device at the required location.
