The smooth shell of a motor-driven rope drum of a mobile rope winch is provided with two conical surfaces which are orientated in opposite directions to one another in the axial direction of the rope drum and have an identical angle of slope corresponding to the friction angle between the load rope and the rope drum. The rope winch can thereby be used as a lifting appliance for lifting and lowering loads with an unlimited length of the load rope, which is clamped in place by a clamping disc, arranged on the drive shaft of the rope drum and driven in synchronism with it, for deflection in the direction of a rope magazine, the load rope being alternately wrapped several times around the two conical surfaces while preventing the individual windings from lying one on top of the other.
