COATING COMPOSITIONS FOR ENTEROSOLUBLE SOLID DOSAGE FORMS

The invention provides a novel coating composition for providing an enterosoluble coating film on the surface of a solid dosage form such as tablets, granules and capsules, which is an aqueous suspension of an enterosoluble coating material such as a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate in an aqueous medium containing triethyl citrate. When the coating composition is dried on the surface of the solid dosage forms to evaporate water, the enterosoluble coating material as the film-forming agent is plasticized by the triethyl citrate as a film-forming aid into a uniform coating film on the surface. Different from triacetin previously proposed as the film-forming aid, triethyl citrate is safe from hydrolysis even in prolonged storage in a highly humind, hot atmosphere so that the problem of the unpleasant smell of acetic acid unavoidable in the use of triacetin is completely solved in addition to the excellent performance of film formation obtained by the use of triethyl citrate.
