1,238,602. Styrene. BADGER CO. Inc. 27 Oct., 1969 [21 Nov., 1968], No. 52507/69. Heading C5E. A continuous process for making styrene comprises: reacting benzene and ethylene with an alkylation catalyst to form ethyl benzene and an effluent, recovering ethyl benzene and dehydrogenating it to produce styrene and an effluent, treating the dehydrogenation effluent to separately recover any toluene and benzene present, recycling the toluene to the dehydrogenation reaction to dealkylate at least part of the toluene to benzene, recycling the benzene to the alkylation reaction and recovering styrene from the remaining dehydrogenation effluent. The dehydrogenation effluent may be treated to recover any methane and/or H 2 present which may be burnt to heat steam used in the dehydrogenation. The alkylation catalyst may be AlCl 3 and the dehydrogenation catalyst may be Fe 2 O 3 which may contain oxides of K, Cr, Co and/or Ca.
|
