The ciliastatic properties of the smoke from smoking tobacco products is reduced by adding to the tobacco from which they are made from 0.1% to 10% by weight of the tobacco of a derivative of oxadiazole of the formula: wherein X is hydrogen, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, or a halogen, the alkyl, cycloalkyl and alkenyl groups having 1 to 12 carbon atoms; R is a phenylene, alkylene, cycloalkylene, or alkenylene group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms; and R' is a phenyl, alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, phenylalkenyl or alkenyl group having 1 to 12 carbon atoms any of which may be substituted with halogen. The oxadiazole derivative may be applied to processed and aged tobacco leaf as a powder or as a solution in a solvent such as an alcohol or ether, a mixture of two or more such solvents, or an aqueous mixture of one such solvent. A long list of suitable oxadiazole derivatives is given; those exemplified being 3-phenyl-5-vinyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole and 3- phenyl-5-methyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole.</p> |
