Supported catalysts having metal compounds as an active component are produced by depositing metal carbonyls from the gas phase on support materials having a large surface area, by oxidative cleavage of the metal carbonyls on the support materials. Activated carbon is a particularly suitable support material. The support materials are advantageously pretreated with promoters. Said supported catalysts are particularly suitable for the production of hydrocarbons according to the Fischer-Tropsch process or for methanising gas mixtures containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
