The machine described has a feed hopper, a pre-comminuter, and a downstream fine grinding device. The pre-comminuter and the fine grinding device are connected together via an annular gap at the periphery of a runner disc carrying a pre-comminuting blade. The axis of the runner is inclined relative to the vertically extending axis of the feed hopper (1), a vertical baffle bar (26) being arranged on the inner wall of the pre-comminuting chamber (23) and reaching to approximately the deepest point of the chamber (Fig. 1). A wedge-shaped pre-comminuting chamber is formed by the oblique position of the runner axis, and the material to be comminuted strikes against the baffle bar in the lower portion of said chamber. The pre-comminuting blades there carry away relatively small pieces of the material which reach the annular gap and fling relatively large pieces upwards into the feed hopper again. A powerful pre-comminution can thus be achieved with low drive power, so that the loading of the downstream fine grinding device becomes smaller. <IMAGE>
