In an apparatus (10), in particular for slicing a loaf of bread (24), having a periodically driven, rotating cutter (18) and a slide (26) driven synchronously therewith, it is proposed, in order to simplify the mechanical structure and increase the versatility of use, that the conveying motor (60) of the slide (26) be designed as a step motor, that a sensing device (42, 44) be provided for transmitting a position signal which indicates the instantaneous rotational position of the cutter (18), and that a control means (28) be provided, which controls the step motor (60), if necessary in both motor-moving directions, as a function of the position signal and of an input movement-step length. <IMAGE>
