1,219,608. Electromagnetically operated reciprocating pump. GAF CORP. July 19, 1968 [Aug. 1, 1967], No. 34514/68. Heading F1A. [Also in Division H2] In an electromagnetically actuated pump for liquid ammonia, a hollow piston 20 is connected by a wire 19 to an armature 18 moved upwards when solenoid 11 is energized by an electrical circuit 14 and returns under gravity when the solenoid is de-energized. The piston and armature reciprocate in a tubular member 2 within a container 17; when the piston is moved upwards, liquid ammonia raises a ball valve 10 off its seat 9 at the bottom of the tube 2 and fills the space beneath the piston; when the piston returns under gravity, a ball valve 24 is raised off its seat 23 at the bottom of the piston and liquid ammonia passes through the piston to fill the pumping chamber. The stroke of the armature is adjustably limited by a hollow member 25 that is screwed into the discharge end of the tubular member 2. The solenoid 11 is periodically energized by the electrical circuit 14 by means of a switch 30 that is controlled by a rotating cam (see Division H2). |
