A device is proposed which serves to record data of a motor vehicle before an accident, or for monitoring purposes. In this way, for example the speed data, and data relating to actuation of the brakes, horn, indicator lights, lights etc., are converted into digital signals and fed to a microcomputer with a microprocessor or even only to a shift register in a simplified form. A control and timing unit supplies a clock frequency from a frequency signal of the speed, which clock frequency is stored in a shift register. The data can be fed when required to a printer via a serial output.
